Either post a link to the dummy account that you have styled for us in the comments of this post or email it to mamkteen (at) gmail.com by July 31st.

Between August 1st and August 7th you will have a chance to vote in this blog for your favourite banner. The winner will be announced on our blog on August 10th.

We will use the winning layout on our MySpace account, and the winning designer will have a chance to be a librarian for an hour at a mutually decided upon time in August.

Do you tweet?

As I indicated in the previous post, we’re looking to create a library myspace page. Other things we’re considering:

Twitter – we could be tweeting the new books as they come in.
Facebook – would you become a fan of us?

If you’re interested in either of these things, please reply here, so that we can gauge interest.

Read It, Make It, Do It @ the Library

And we’ve planned some great programming for you this summer.

We kick everything off on June 26th with Not a Box at the Harbor Pavilion. Get creative and think inside the box in this crafty program. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, program will start at 7pm. This will also be your first chance to sign up for our Teen summer reading program.

Our summer reading program will work the same as last year – pledge to read a certain number of pages (at least 250) and complete your pledge by August 15th and you will get an invite to our end of summer bash and some not so fabulous prizes – well, about the same level of prizes as the ones we give out at our regular teen programs (whether you think those are fabulous or not).

During the summer we’ll be having a series of drop in craft programs. These will run from 6:30pm-7:30pm in the children’s department of the library, but you can come in at any point and leave when you’re done with your craft. We’ll get you started and then leave you to it.

July 1st – The Crafty Diva’s Lifestyle Makeover – Make a journal in which you can tell your own story.
July 8th – The Best of Instructables – Light up your world with LED Throwies
July 15th – Creepy Cute Crochet – Get hooked on crochet
July 22nd – What Have You Lost – Play with your words and design your own Magnetic Poetry set
July 29th – Hacking MySpace – Reboot your online life by redesigning your MySpace, or redesign ours for our MySpace design contest
August 5th – Terrific T-Shirts – Refresh an old t-shirt with a variety of fabric pens.

Contests – We’ve got contests, but we haven’t sorted out the details yet.
Create a layout for our brand new MySpace Page
Create a new banner for our blog
Librarian for an hour (or possibly more)

Watch this space for more details. We’ll also have more information at the kickoff program on June 26th

We also have ordered at least one copy of each book on the Hommocks, Mamaroneck High, Rye Neck Middle and Rye Neck High school summer reading lists. If you’re looking for a book and we don’t have it in, we’ll be happy to order it for you from another library.

Game On

Rather than having a movie this month, we’re experimenting with our first ever game night. Are you ready for the challenge?

We’ll have a variety of games, with our usual array of fabulous prizes, along with door prizes and refreshments. As usual, the doors will open at 6:30 pm and the program will start at 7pm. Sixth grade and up, but teens only.

As you may have heard, our programming has moved to the Harbor Pavilion while we are in our temporary location at 102 Mamaroneck Avenue This is the big stone building right by the beach in the park. It’s simple to get to, just drive, bike or walk across Boston Post Road into the Harbor parking lot. When you see the playground, you’ll have to turn off (no cars allowed) onto the path to your left. The building is on your left and we’re in the blue room (usually).

If you miss the movie nights, don’t worry. We’ll be back with another great movie January 6th. After that, we’re planning to alternate movies with other programs (limited availability of the program space) unless we have massive protests.

Failure to blog

We’ve been so busy with the move I haven’t posted here in ages. But we’re back. YA now occupies 5 shelves (soon to be expanded to 7) in the children’s room of our temporary location: 102 Mamaroneck Avenue (between Lum Yen and the bridal shop).

We are buying some new books, though not as many as we used to, and if we don’t have it, we can always get it from other libraries. We may also be expanding the teen movie selection soon with some classic teen movies. If you have any favorites you’d like us to have, please let us know (and remember that we have limited space and won’t be able to get everything).

Things to expect in the near future:

  • A new movie poll
  • A banner contest
  • More book reviews
  • More links in the sidebar
  • Me forgetting which account I’m logged in under and posting as hhertzof
  • Discussion questions
  • Twitter feed.
  • Library myspace page
  • More periodic failures to blog, as I’m nothing if not consistent

If I’ve missed anything you’d like to see, that’s what the comments are for. Perhaps we can get some discussion going.

Book post – Hot Lunch by Alex Bradley

Molly has blue hair and an antisocial attitude. When she’s assigned to work on an assignment with perky blonde Cassie, she refuses and does the assignment on her own.

This starts a downward spiral that ends in a food fight in the cafeteria. Letting the punishment fit the crime, the principal assigns Cassie and Molly to work together in the cafeteria, but when their private war causes the head of the cafeteria to quit, Cassie and Molly are told that they’re in charge of the cafeteria until they get a vote of approval five times in a row from their fellow students.

But even then, Molly and Cassie can’t seem to work together.

Try this book if you like Flavor of the Week by Tucker Shaw or Leave the Cooking to Me by Judie Angell.
